Grapes are Appealing.

        By: Raz
Summertime has all the appeal of a grape: it gleams gloriously in the eyes of the hungry; it slips so easily into the famished mouth; it bursts – round cup of cold and quenching brilliance that it is – beneath the tongue of the fortunate and deserving. Then it’s over: all that satisfaction swallowed in the breath of a moment, and the faculties already craving a new sensation.

For those lucky souls who don’t have classes, homework, work-work, or children to look after, summertime can be a little too rich on the time-side. Somewhere around summer's porch mat, you dropped all your resolutions (wake up 6A.M., go to gym, come home, clean house, cook dinner, recreation ‘til bedtime at 10P.M.; repeat) and find yourself waking up at 2P.M. and pissed for the rest of the day. Nothing is appealing, except food – then you’re mentally screaming at yourself to STOP EATING, YOU FAT COW.

It’s time to drop the slothfulness and get back in control of your life (at least for the next couple of months). Make a trip to Barnes and Noble, Borders, or the nearest used bookstore and peruse the shelves, pick out ten or twelve books , and find a good chair to sort out the ones worth reading.

Raz would like to give her personal recommendations. She has recently finished Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre, and recommends it to anyone looking for a good mix of romance, adventure, mystery, and inspiration. This book is truly a fantastic read. If you hit a slow part, persevere! If you haven’t already read this book, I guarantee it is well worth completing.

If you haven’t already – and assuming it’s not against your religion – take down the Harry Potter series! Really, you’d be amazed at J.K. Rowling’s ability to mold a seven-piece series into an epic blend of emotion and adventure. Being a children’s book, you won’t need to stress over difficult language or page-long sentences; however, as with most adolescent books, it is packed with excellent advice and inspiration abounding. Give it a try.

As far as nonfiction, Raz also highly recommends Steven R. Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. You’ll find it in the business section, but she feels it would fit better in the self-improvement section; ah, well. The seven keys given in the book are profound, but you’ll have to see for yourself. This is the book that will really put you in control of yourself, and instill good habits – the keys to good living.

Hopefully finding a satisfying read will give you a reason to wake up earlier, or inspire you to replace all those good intentions with action. Or maybe just kill time.

Brain Juices

        By: Kori
School is out for the majority of us, right? But that doesn't mean that our brains should go into OFF-mode. Of course, we wish it could be that easy. ;] Some of us have jobs; some of us are taking summer courses. Others have to tend to family or other matters that are of much importance. But Kori totally has an idea.. that'll keep everyone amused and keep their brains working as summer rolls by.

SCRABBLE! Who doesn't like Scrabble? If you have an iPhone or an iPod Touch like all the people do these days, you should invest in the app, "Words with Friends." There is a free and a paid version; you need not trouble yourself with the paid version unless you truly wish to get rid of the annoying ads. Challenge your friends and family to competitive games and see who comes out with the most wins.

Personally, out of the 20-some games I've played so far, I've only lost two. If you run out of friends and family who are willing to play or who simply can't play fast enough for you, you can also find random opponents to play. For the sake of the randomness of this article... for whoever has an iPod Touch or an iPhone and is willing to download the app... Kori challenges YOU!
